In ANA (All Nippon Airways) in-flight magazine 'Wingspan' alone, I have published more than 60 stories, most illustrated by my photos. In 2010, I added DYNASTY magazine, the 156-page international in-flight publication of China Airlines (the national carrier of Taiwan). And, I have been a regular contributor to 'Garuda' magazine, the national carrier of Indonesia, for 5 years now. The combined audience for all three magazines is close to 2 million readers monthly. In addition, I write a 2-page color centerspread travel story every month (also published online) for the Asahi Weekly, the Japanese equivalent of America's weekly *Parade* magazine.
Since 2007, I've been a frequent contributor to INTERMEZZO Magazine (http://www.intermezzomagazine.com), with a focus on international gourmet cuisine & travel, adding a US outlet to my readership. Circulation: 283,000. Based in Boston, distributed nationwide in the US & to 40 countries. The demographic is upscale frequent travelers. Full page ads valued at $21,000. For 2012, I am also adding stories on www.travellady.com, which gets over 3 million hits a month.
Imagine finding that students of every age in a foreign country, from senior executives to high schoolers, all make precisely the same kind of errors when they use English. The cause? Most students have learned from people who never spoke the language - their teachers learned it by grammar translation method and that's how they taught it, too. I researched this phenomenon for ten years. The result is this book, which aims to right the specific wrongs.
Idiomatic expressions are one of the most difficult points for students of foreign languages to decipher. English has thousands of idioms but the individual words ("talk turkey", "make ends meet", "cat got your tongue?") don't make a lot of sense when the language is brand new. By using the mnemonic device of cartoons and related stories, the secrets of American idioms are revealed.
This series has run as weekly newspaper cartoons in Japan, Spain, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We are always looking for new markets, so if you know of any bilingual publications that want to enliven their pages with educational cartoons, contact the author.
