Xingping, Li River, China
Xingping, Li River, China.
It was easy to see why the jagged mountains which line China’s Li River at Xingping have been compared to giant dragon's teeth. The free-standing cone-shaped hills are covered with foliage but sometimes seem ripped open. Besides the famous pinnacles themselves, hundreds of arched bamboo trees fringe the river banks below, creating hazy purple reflections on the tranquil waters where the currents slow for bends. Tiny rafts can be seen skimming the surface. Seen from a low angle, the balancing boatmen seem to be walking on water. A basket at the bow holds a cormorant, which dives into the water to fish for its master.
